Graduate Mentoring Training Sessions

The CLS offers professional development sessions for our trainees, including Graduate Mentor Training facilitated by Laura Rico-Beck, Assitant Dean of Education and Outreach.

Laura has built a program of two 2-hour sessions using the CIMER curriculum and the discussion of case studies to collectively describe and plan for high-leverage practices in research mentoring. These two sessions are aimed to increase and hone research mentoring competencies in graduate students and postdocs. Each session hosts approximately 18 trainees and 2 faculty participants.

Session 1: Maintaining Effective Communication and Aligning Expectations

In this 2-hour session we will discuss high-leverage communication practices and strategies, including tools for providing and receiving constructive feedback and strategies for effective interpersonal communication. We will then shift to a discussion of how to articulate, communicate, and align beneficial expectations for research mentoring relationships.

Session 2: Fostering Independence and Promoting Self-Efficacy

In this 2-hour session we will discuss how to foster mentee independence at different educational and career stages. We will then shift to discussing self-efficacy in the context of research, and strategies mentors and mentees can use to foster the development of this important competency in mentees.
